Day One: Leon to San Martin

In the Plaza de San Marcos, Leon, we met to leave for San Martin at 7 am. The weather was mid-40s, but clear with no rain. After a day of sight-seeing we were ready to begin our pilgrimage. Along the way, our Spanish friends left us cookies and biscuits on their front steps, and fellow pilgrims shared their coffee.

Here we are at the end of a 25k day, approaching San Martin, tired, hungry, and full of our first blisters. The sun wasn´t too scorching, and a refreshing breeze allowed us to stay cool. Most of the day we walked along the trail of the busy 120 highway, with a few brief moments of natural beauty. Our first day along the meseta was a taste of what pilgrims have experienced for centuries.

Before the Camino

León cathedral

On Monday, 28 May, 2007, the Fordham peregrinos/as will meet in front of the cathedral in León, Spain, to begin two weeks walking the medieval pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela. We have been preparing this spring with reading, walking and talking about the camino, and are looking forward to sharing the experience.
You can follow our progress on this blog as members of the group post messages, updates and pictures from their Camino.
